We discussed this on my pd arb course few years back. The benefits are as described in report. It is highly likely to reduce the amount of decay into the main trunk. The stub will likely have some growth. This growth will sustain the sap flow of the branch and interlocking cells within that portion of the tree trunk. The ability for water to transport through the cells will reduce the propensity for the bark below the branch attachment to delaminate through drying. I think that there is discussion to be had for what constitutes best practice when we look to reduce decay in the main trunk through pruning large diameter branches close to the bark collar or leaving a stump at certain/ varying distances from branch collar. I'd do it and not worry about it.

I think you make a good point there, that's a sycamore, it will undoubtedly "throw out"
