Keeping your rings dry

and stack your round timber on its side,not on its flat ,helps loads,if you stack flat it will pull moisture out of thr ground

i always try to split the rings in half to speed up the drying and try not to leave them round....every little helps

Yeah, keep the rings/logs off the ground and if you cover them, allow plenty of air to circulate - don't cover the sides.

right chaps i have been hearing some conflicting answers to a question a have asked a couple fire wood guys - does timber dry faster as rings or in lengths ?? some say lengths some say rings ???

as Hucky says, the more surface area exposed to the air the faster it will dry. i split a load of wood a few weeks back, its been down in rings 12 months, as soon as the splitter touched it you could see the water coming out.

Moisture has to travel along the grain to exit from the end grain.

 

So the ring can be 10ft across, if it is cut 8" deep it will dry just as quick as a ring measuring 1ft across and 8" deep

cheers chaps , i wont be telling dangerous brian that or he will be logging everything into 8 inch rings on site ha ha .

 

secondly do any of you use popular for fire wood ?? i have been offered about 5 tons for free but tbh i really cant see it being worth burning or waiting 12 months for it to dry out but once again this is only my oppinion . what do you guys think ????

polar burns just as good as any other wood, it just needs drying under cover as it is like a sponge when it rains
