Any idea how much usable wood is in these?

Got to hate Devon sometimes; has more than its fair share of village idiots who will indeed do just that.

No mate I love Devon. Yes sure the wages are poor so stuff like this will be done for free but there are so many great things about this county and it's people. Call me a village idiot if you like but I am going to offer to clear it for free and suspect he will get a better offer.

Out of interest, a question to the OP; do you personally know the cutter who felled and left them in their present position? And can you ask them why they left the tree so?

My suspiscion is that due to the landowner thinking someone's going to pay him to come ad tidy it up, he told the guy felling them to get them down as cheaply as possible, i.e. switch saws off when they hit the floor and stop the clock ticking.

We've all worked for one's like it, usually just the once :sneaky2:

Yes I know him well. Frankly I don't see the problem. These trees are in a private field not a school playground and they are completely stable in the current position. He was only asked to fell so he did. What risks others take from here on is their choice.

Sounds like you've thought it out so go with that.

To start off it does seem hard to find wood - but as people get to know you you will find you get offered more and more.

If youare going to clear for free I would offer to clear it but not do the rake up ie. sawdust and bits and pieces.

I was just wondering and now I know. Both you and Chris Sheppard have answered my question.

Thanks Rob

As you say wood is proving hard to come by and logs seller with no logs just won't work. I can sit on a high horse and say I won't do it for less than X or just get on with it and get some free wood close to home.

Fair enough , when I've been asked to fell on estates I've interpreted that has meant leave them safe as well and would do so accordingly.
