New Chain.. little adjust left?

I've been using Stihl chain for a while now and have started to notice how long there getting!

 

I know there supposed to come pre stretched!

 

I put a new chain on a 18" bar and I have virtually no adjustment left!

 

All of my Stihl chains are like this 15" 18" & 20"

 

Even a 18" Oregon chain was like this, had to bin it with half the meat left on the cutters as it stretched and I can't adjust it any more!

 

Any one else have this problem??

How tight do you run your chains? I've run all types on my saws and never had this problem.

 

The only thing I can think is that the common denominator is you, but I can't think why. I'd be interested to read the solution to this.

 

My only possible solution would be to order custom chain loops with one or two drive links less than standard.

Could you be using a 3/8 bars but using 325 pitch chains?

I also noticed your from durham and a certain dealer in the area is terrible at making up chains I've had to take a few back because they had one to many drive links

How about counting the actual number of drive links and comparing that to the number it should be for the given bar length ? With a chain splitter + riveter it would be possible to salvage chains with too many links the chain i.e. remove a link. To have complete control over the chain lengths, you could go the whole hog and splash out on a roll of chain + splitter + riveter. I have seen 25ft rolls as well as the more standard 100ft rolls. There are often good deals at arb shows on this sort of stuff.

Are you buying them as loops or made up for your specific bar and saw. If you buy a stihl loop, it will be for a stihl bar. These will be a link or so too long for a husky type bar.

I'm not convinced. Surely a chain of X number of links should be the same whether husky or stih of the same size? Especially if the dealer is making up the loops themselves?

 

The last stihl chain I fitted to a husky was a bit long too, though when we held it up to the old chain they had the same number of links as that was the first thing we thought was wrong - it was a bit odd really. It wasn't as bad as the OP, but it definitely used a lot more adjustment than normal for a new chain.
