I need help to settle a debate between myself and a friend.

I have twice lost trailers backwards down a driveway with the handbreak on and a chipper.

I was under the impression the braking mechanism only works parked facing forwards.

Have i had faulty trailers and have to eat humble pie :blushing:or can i gloat a him over coffee tommorrow:biggrin:

The joys of autoreverse brakes. Only work well when rolling forward, not as efficient when going backwards handbrake on or not. Been there got the T-shirt moving chipper by hand on sloping drive pulled handbrake on, kept rolling slight dent in garage door oops, customer never noticed. Only decent brake in reverse is a lump of wood as a chock.

I thought it didnt matter if using the handbrake. i've never had one roll off on me. That said i also thought that the handbrake only brakes, say the rear most axle on a twin axle trailer, so if the rear axle is off the ground, and the handbrake is on. She'll go bye bye! I could be wrong (Often am)

I have always used trailers, parked braked facing uphill, and in 30 years never had a braking ptoblem.

The auto-reverse braking system that works when reversing a traiker, to prevent braked coming on is totally different. If the handbrake is applied, the brakes should be on.

This is correct. The problem could be worn or faulty brakes, or too much slack in the brake rod, very easily sorted.
