' When is the best time to prune ?' Errrrr about ten years ago mate ! Is my stock answer, from all the A Platnoides pruning Ive had a hand in-I think yr initial plan was sound -leaving formative branch work to get the desired end shape. It will give you a clean crown too.

Oh yea- an whoever asks a question on here-deserves a straight answer- ( at some point)

The honest answer to 'when is the best time to prune' question is - never!

If it must be done (let's face it, for the benefit of the customer, not the tree), it will nearly always be species dependent.

As i said it is a formal garden and to let these trees become what they want to become, they would completely dominate and be out of place!

And its not a case of right tree wrong spot due to the fact through the apprporiate pruning these trees enhance the desired effect of the garden!!

IMO Loffthouse and Skyhuck got it right about pruning!:grinning-smiley-003

Obviously there are times you shouldn't prune certain species, ie, Prunus 'cause of silver leaf!

The reason i am going to do it in the winter is merely aesthetics!

But there are debates about winter or summer pruning but i am not asking that, i merely want to know if any body personally has pruned 'Globossum' hard to get them back into their lovely brought from the nursery shape (perfectly round)!

I honestly don't mean to cause you any offence, but if you are in a position where you are advising potential customers on how and when pruning should be carried out then this is something you ought know. If you were pricing a job and someone asked you if it was a good time to prune, what would you say?

the question was asked because i wanted to see what oppinions other arborists had , i personally do not have my head firmly stuck u my own arse ! best practises change on a regular basis ( as would and tec cert or prof dip qualified arborist agree , i my self recomend that and heavy pruning is to be carried out during the dormant period . How ever as i stated i had been speaking to a Prof Dip qualified consultant and he was saying about carrying out heavy crown reductions and pollarding during the height of the growing period .

may be just maybe if you had read what i had said and thought before you attempted to critisise me for wanting to learn from others and use this forum for its intended purpose you too may have learnt something :mad1:

as for skyhuk i think there should be a few more that think like you do , we could all learn a bit from each other !!!
