Landrover/PTO Chipper

The council used to have a few Landys with PTO's they where used for operating gang mowers.

You could have a PTO driven tow behind chipper, if I was going to use a chipper on the rear of a mog I would have a tow behind, save the carrying capacity for the chip, or better still put the chipper on the front.

Landrover gearboxes are not the best, I would not want to try running a chipper with one.

Two trailers is only allowed for agri vehicles.

The pto gearbox can be purchased for £280 new from a spanish company I have the contact details somewhere (a lot cheaper than genuine LR part) you will then have to drill a hole in each cross member of any landrover apart from the series vehicles. You could then have prop made up with support bearings for about £400. However you will not achieve more that 30hp at 540rpm, with out a reduction gearbox on either the rear of the pto shaft or the pto gearbox. But then you will be seriously flogging the landrover and will need extra cooling, not to mention some seriously sensitive stress control on the chipper so not to kill the LR gearbox & engine.

The other way is to have a hydraulic pump on the pto gearbox and run the chipper with a hydraulic motor which will also get you 30hp with the right set up. This would cost in the region of £1800. Easy to do with a towable pto chipper.

It is all possible but I reckon it would be a massive risk in regards to future repairs.

Nah- don't let all these nay-sayers sway you-it is do-able but youll need lots of extra kit ( oil cooler a must) probly a small three point linkage setup-plus choose very carefully yr chipper fr the job but it should run a treat with modern engine in it-not 2 1/4 ( unless its on lpg) I shall toy w the idea too one day -but -tech cert first :(

they used the portal axles off a mog to create the agri rover.

Wrong, they used chain driven drop boxes that bolted to the ends on standard land rover axles, have a set of four in my shed. The big problem was the chain was not up to the job and often snapped.

has anyone come across the fumo multicar, beautiful set up, like a mini mog. they have hydraulics on front and/or on rear, that will power the little premier 105, or a variety of other stuff like mowers etc and will carry 3t if i remember rightly, huge price tag though,
