The saw of shame!

If he can't sharpen a saw he should not use it simple. When I started working in this industry an old boy gave me a saw & told me to sharpen it every time he would get a little hammer tap all the cutters and tell me to do it again and again. I came quite proficient at sharpening.

I learned to sharpen by cutting railway sleepers!

 

4-6 cuts max before it was time for a sharpen, and thats after picking the stones out of the sleepers with a screwdriver and a wire brush

Well it all went well today.

 

It was a good way of really showing how annoyed about it without actually tearing him off a strip. Making a joke of it. He used the saw of shame all morning.

In the van on the way back to the yard I said we'd do some sharpening practice at some point.

Naturally (for him!) he said he could do it perfectly well already.....yeah right!

funny i wouldn't of done it on principle would of quite happily of sharpened it every time it got blunt but cant stand the deliberate blunting of any cutting edge!

The best lesson ever had for taking responcibilty for my mistakes with machineary maintenance was buying my own. When you have to buy the saw, fuel, oil, chain, bar, filters ect. You soon learn how to get the most bang for your buck.

But can't sharpen a saw?

 

 

When you do that sharpening practice, the number one rule in my book is to do it in a vice under a strong, preferably daylight temperature light. The theory of cutting angles etc is all very well, but it's not till they can actually see the damaged edge, and the result of the correct application of a file, that it actually starts to come together.

 

It's amazing the amount of tree workers I see using chains which are sub par. It's even more amazing how many bosses seem to tolerate it.

I'm not sure staring counts as the ultimate deterrent.

 

You have to narrow your eyes a bit, just like Clint Eastwood. Then they get the message.

He was proper old school when I turned up with hat chainsaw trousers & boots he just muttered at me leave all that crap at home tomorrow and bring your wits it's the only thing that all save you out hear son.
