i just read this earlier regarding safety helmets and boots

Do I pay VAT on safety footwear?

According to HM Revenue and Customs [HMRC Reference:Notice 701/23 (March 2002)] boots and helmets are zero-rated when ALL the following conditions are met:

The articles must be boots or helmets

They must be manufactured to the appropriate European or British standard

They must bear a mark indicating conformity with those standards

They must for industrial use

They must not be supplied to persons for use by their employees

See http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebAp p/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_page Label=pageLibrary_PublicNoticesAndInfoSheets&p ropertyType=document&columns=1&id=HMCE_CL_0001 07#P40_2580 for more information

So as 90% of our equipment we use or wear is safety equipment then we shouldn't have to pay VAT on our equipment

Boots and helmets are exempt, but no other items, I'm not sure I get your point??

Take VAT off all safety equipment and you will end up paying for it somewhere else.

Boots and helmets are VAT free as they are worn in practically ever industry. The amount of money saved by the government from people not ending up in A and E with broken head and feet justifies the VAT exemption.

That would probably not be the case with other safety equipment, so no it shouldnt all be VAT exempt.
