Cool Ian - actually just looked at mine and there's a crack in it now - wood has shrunk and caused it!!

 

 

I have another plan (how do you do yours Ian?) - using a batten top and bottom the thickness of the mirror and then thin battens running vertically so the mirror is not attached directly to the mirror.

 

 

Could have been worse - could have been bigger and then sold to someone! Back to the drawing board...

You don't.

Window frames are made of dry wood and separate to "the bones" of the building.

Metal is best avoided anywhere on an oak frame.

It acts as a cold bridge causing condensation problems, it's ugly as sin, and anything but high grade stainless against green oak would stain the oak and rust the metal quickly.

I have often wondered how David Hughes fitted the windows into his timber framed workshop (featured in 'Homework' book).

 

 

Can't imagine that it was all made out of seasoned oak?!

A lot of Oak framers sandwich the glazing between neoprene gaskets. One side is to the green Oak, there's 'battening' around the glazing that's the same thickness as the unit. The outer face is capped with air dried Oak.

I always think a flexi glue (Stixall??) or a bed of silicone would be a decent bit of insurance on mirrors.
