I've got a garmin only around 9 months old with lifetime map upgrades it cost around £100 from halfrauds I also use a tom tom which has sub locations on it (electrical stuff) and the tom tom blows the garmin out of the water, if I need to go any where in my vehicle I'll use the works tom tom. The garmin which looks nice will take you on obscure routes unlike the tom tom, you can set the garmin for fastest or shortest route it'll still take you a weird way to your destination. Unfortunately my missus bought me the garmin for Xmas so I'm stuck with it haha

Had a Garmin for years, TomTom for 18 months which failed now back on Garmin.

Navigation not much between them, possibly tomtom very marginally better although it still took us down country lanes 6ft wide We use the satnav to find good restaurants when we are away so Garmin is much better unless you are happy to dine out at McDonalds. Basically POI on Garmin better imo.

Smart phone may be the way to go though
