Bloke at the factory where I worked used to fail every Thursday on days. When the gaffer asked him why he always missed Thursday he said, "I can change my day if you want". Another one was why do you only do 4 days. "Because I can't manage on 3"

Accountant said as I don't guarantee the work it's fine. Not clued up on that front. Another thing he was the one that pointed out to me that having a day off with wage increase it's technically like still getting five days!

If HMRC decide otherwise then the bill for the PAYE will fall on you as the "employer". They won't take anything from the deemed employee, but gross up their net take and hit you for the tax. If he's been with you 3 years this could add up to tens of thousands.

BTW if you do fall out with him then odds-on he will dob you into HMRC and his side of the story will be pretty compelling.

One of my bosses used to suffer with Monday morning syndrome from quite a few of his lads, until he introduced a bonus scheme where a percentage of your wage is classed as performance related bonus that you loose for the week if you don't turn up on a Monday or a Friday, amazingly enough stopped the condition almost over night! In my opinion that said more about the quality of staff he had on for him than anything else. But definitely works

Im not defending absenteeism(my word is my honour)but sometimes these type of threads degenerate into some kind of groundie beating exercise,i swear some of the employers on here treat their workers like some kind of lower caste.I think some of you deserve the crappier staff because of your high and mighty attutudes(im not talking about any one involved in this thread though)

Anyone agree or is it just me?

I would beg to differ.

I think regardless of groundy or climber, its all about having respect for each other and realising that a team can only function well if communication is both honest and open.

Bear in mind that if the job can't go ahead due to folk not turning up for work, it reflects poorly on the company and may lose you that customer.
