as long as your not weaving in and out, its perfectly legal to undertake on a motorway or dual cariageway, its classed as continueing on your way, so when your sitting at "69mph" on the inside lane, and mr muppet is sitting at 50 in the middle, cos the insides for lorrys, innit, you can sail on past him and not bother 1 little bit

Absolutly correct.

Thank you, bin doing this this years, without incident.

A friendly Royal type wave out the window, while going past, does sometimes appear to have unwarranted effects!!

I hate it when your doing 85 or 90 in the fast lane, then the cars in front spot a a cop car and all anchor on!!!!

I pass police cars at 85 all the time, they are not interested unless your doing over 90, IME.

Presumably an "indicated" 85, so prob still on the safe side of a genunine 80.

I required to be careful recently while driving on the Sat-nav as I rapidly started using it as the speedo, and was allowing for the inbuilt speedo error.

but oops

no error in Satnav

85 IS 85

Not really realized until a glance at the Speedo shows nearer 95mph.:blushing::001_rolleyes:

I'm pretty sure thats only the case if all lanes are full and your just maintaining your spot in your lane.

If your in an lane with space in front of you and the car on your right is the same you will get done if the police see you.

Huck,

Having been driving for some 35 years, I "rationalized", that regardless of the other traffic in the lanes, IF one was simply maintaining a steady speed, and some half-wit chooses to sit blocking the outer lane while travelling slower, one would not be done for "undertaking".

i.e.

Myself not changing lanes, nor accelerating. merely "Maintaining progress"

as in Paul's post.

Cheers

You can "rationalised" all you like, but don't expect a police officer or magistrate to agree with your Rationalisations.

Taken directly from the Highway code online:-

268

Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.

I looked into it because of this thread.

As far as I can make out it is not illegal to undertake on a motorway but it is frowned upon, in my own opinion there are dangers involved.

They key bit seems to be the wording "should not" rather than "must not". If you are seen deliberately weaving all over the place to overtake/undertake you are likely to be charged with dangerous driving if the police see you.

I have to admit, I always thought it was illegal, apparently not.

It's not been illegal since the 1972 road traffic act. As LGW stated Due care and attention will come into play.

I'd give it a miss, along with a day at the magistrates court trying to explain my way out of it.

My Mr Muppet was catching me fast in the inside lane. I was probably doing a little over 70 in the inside lane and as there was a slow car ahead I pulled into the middle lane to overtake. Mr m carried on up my inside then realised a slow car was blocking his path. Meanwhile the traffic in the middle lane slowed so the safe gap I had left closed up. Mr m then had a choice of either attempting to slow to 50, hit the slow car or wedge himself in the decreasing gap in the middle lane. He was lucky that my brakes and the cars brakes behind me were top notch.

Would you say inconsiderate ?
