an interesting sycamore

I had to go and remove as much as this Sycamore as I possibly could with a chainsaw. It had self seeded many years ago and is now hindering the excavation of these Sluice Gates which have been discovered. The gates controlled the water flow from the River Thames and the moat which surrounded Fulham Palace. They are from the 1840's.

The archaeologists want to excavate them with a view to possibly restoring them but this sycamore is obviously causing them problems. I took it down as far as i could, resorting to small blocks at a time at the end. Remarkably the only time i buggered the saw was when I hit a stone right at the end.

There was a labourer present who was moaning like mad because they were expecting him to remove the rest including the root plate with a hammer and chisel and a blunt axe.....in 2 days!....laugh i nearly p****d myself!

Enjoyable job.
