Self employed tractor drivers rates

When I hired that big jd to pull our timber trailer got to the dual carriage way and it took me 20 minutes to get the light on the roof to flash. Lots of manual reading and computer fiddling just to get the beacon on. Not sure I would be worth £12 an hour

I'm with Steve on this one.......Let's ask the question, would you expect someone on as little as £8 an hour to give a toss about your £50k+ tractor and whatever implements are attached to it... I know I wouldn't. I'm not saying they shouldn't take care of someone else's gear but I'd rather pay a little more per hour and get the right man for the job who will look after things properly.

Just a quick look on the job centre bought up this in my area.....I think it's the first job in the link that is offering £8 an hour

Contractors my way are paying max £8 for lads, young lads, treat them like dogs, doing mega hours from March to November, Kit gets treated well because its all top of the range and brand new, that's how they keep lads, they just want the nice kit. If you can get £12 sat on a tractor fair play. Thing is, nice kit is great, but when you've spent a 100 hours in it that week you never want to see it again!

Minimum wage seems to = little hassle

skilled working man £10 with lots of hassle. Lots of engineers have left our trade due to driving hassles and never ending h&s paper work which most of the time serves absolutely no purpose but to keep the paper clip counters in a job.

If you're driving one of these modern tractors you should be on at least £12 p/h. Last winter i wanted to drive my truck into a big farmers grain store to get some wheat to feed his pheasants and a big new claas was in the doorway ticking over.

No one around so i waited long enough then got in it to try and shift it,for a time i couldnt move it an inch, somehow i got it to lurch forward a couple of feet at a time bleeping and flashing warning lights at me, then i climbed out of it and drove my truck through the gap.
