it would have to be Douglas Bader, doesn't matter what problems you've got, you can overcome them to achieve your goals; he definitely lived up to the RAF's motto Per Ardua Ad Astra- through hardship to the stars. Socially though it would have to be Dick winters' fellow officer 'buck' compton who was friends with officers and men alike.

With you on that; Buck was sometimes accused of being too 'familiar' with his men - I have mixed feelings on that theory. Winters on the other hand was an incredible leader, as was his CO, Bob Sink. The ficticious character Leroy Jethro Gibbs (NCIS) also gets my vote - again blunt leadership; character flaws yes, but so what, the overall package is brilliant.

TCD, to go down the fictitious character route it would have to be Richard Sharpe of the 95th rifles- born the son of a whore, raised in a foundling home, became a murderer (ironically this happened not far from me in Wetherby), joined the army as a private and worked, or should that be killed, his way up to Lt-Col and probably made more enemies on his own side doing it but didn't care. But a real person from the same era would be The Peer himself, the Duke of Wellington a great leader of men by being so detached and disparaging of them by calling them the scum of the earth, they fought harder to gain his approval.
