Improve Your MPG

I have used Redex in the past and found no improvement in mpg. Came across an advert in a magazine for Clean Drive and thought I would give it a go.

You wait until you have a quarter tank left, drive for 6 miles to warm things up, put the whole contents of the tin in,drive for another ten miles then fill up. It claims to clean the engine, the diesel particulate filter, sensors and improve mpg.

Previously I used to average 330 miles to the tank in my 2007 Ford Ranger diesel. Following adding a tin of clean drive, I am now averaging 375 miles. The treatment lasts three months so I reckon in that time I will be £70 better off.

£14.99 for a tanks worth of injector cleaner??

Roll up, roll up, get your genuine snake oil right here folks!

If you want to add anything, John Deer fuel conditioner is well thought of in the plant game and very, very economical. £14.99 would do you about 1000 litres.

Heavy on maintenance, light on the right foot is the best way for economy.

That's fair comment, but light on the right foot all the time can lead to the coked up engine that injector cleaner will alleviate.

Always best to give a diesel a good thrashing once a week or so, just for a minute once she's up to temperature.

Agree with this, also removing egr valve helps to keep the caking down.

Blanked off the EGR valve on mine and removed the internals of the DPF . Returns more to the gallon if you deliberately go light on the right but also spins up quicker if you go heavy on the right ! :001_smile:

I would be happy to anywhere near 330 to a tank from my 09 Ranger

  • 4 weeks later...

When towing my LM126 with the Defender 130, we average 25mpg. No towing, normal driving with the 'old' speed splurge, the Defender averages 29mpg. Usually get to about 375 miles on the trip before the low fuel light comes on - and there's still at least 10 litres in the tank. :)
