Stainless cable ok for winches?

Recommended Posts

I can get some stainless cable 8mm pretty cheap, korean made stuff 6 strand but not sure about the number of stands within the 6. its half a reel left over and sitting in a shed for years. Im trying to find out more about it. Im looking at Running it on a igland 3000/2

Is stainless alright or should I stick to the usual wire rope. I know theres some loss of strength but not a huge amount.

Anyone else out there use it? what do I need to know?

thanks guys.

if you do not know the swl on the cable, do not use it, for the sake of a few dollars is it worth the risk of a break and possible whiplash injury ?, most winch cables are a 7/19 cable, that is 7 twists of 19 strands of ht steel, arranged 6twists around a 7th core, stainless just does not have the tensile strength at the same diameters

I would be worried about using stainless as a winch rope. It is probably only designed for tension as a guy rope with good weathering properties . It may have the required breaking strain you are looking for but how would it fair up being wound on and off the drum a few hundred times . I would have thought it would have fatigued in this application.

p

isnt stainless more brittle than high tensile wire?fine on a straight pull but once wound round winch drum it may start breaking stands and become weaker and horrible to handle.jake:thumbdown:

I thought 316 stainless had half the tensile strength of high tensile steel. It has lower fatigue strength as Bob said and interestingly its higher friction leads to higher wear as the wires mutually chafe.
