Was the nest open to the elements from above or accessed from a side orientated cavity opening?

The nest was open to the elements. It's a branch wound that's rotted in and on the other side of the tree there is a large ripped out branch with some twigs stuffed in it. The defects are joined and I suspect any water that runs into the nest must drain through the bottom to the other side.

 

I am back there tomorrow so I can get some more shots from the ground if you like

Bloody good job you checked it out first.

 

To be honest, not checking a spot like that would have been reckless, I have looked into countless dark dirty water filled cavities but fluffy owl chicks is the nicest find yet. Nice to abandon a job for something that's not a pigeon.
