Spalted Beech

Had this piece of Beech come in a while ago to be cut up for logs. Thought it looked to have some nice colourings in from the end but a bit of rot coming up from the base. Was originally about 10ft long but had to take a good 4 or ft off to get to the end of the rot, still didn't get quite get to the bottom of it but not far off, was about 24'' diameter. Was amazed by the colours once started cutting! Cut straight down the centre for the first cut to half it then stood the half up took another cut off to get a straight edge to sit on the mill then worked down from the top if that makes sense. Milled on a Logosol M7. Thinking it would make a nice table as laid out in one of the pictures. Pictures only show one half milled other half is still to do ran out of time.

Cracking piece of timber that, great colouring and grain pattern.

helped cut up an ancient old bugger once and it was just as coloured, beautiful stuff you got there mate.

 

a table will look good but what's happening to the rest of it?

Not being pedantic, I'd describe that as heavily flamed beech, rather than spalted. Either way, it's just stunning, and perhaps one of the most beautiful bits of beech I've seen.

agree with J, thats heavily flamed, maybe a little bit of spalting on the outer edges, but stunning nevertheless, that would make some beautifull tables

i have to agree with you there jon, though technically it's called figured not flamed.

 

flamed wood is when it's cut through a crotch so you get this pattern on a bit of veneer.

or "curl", which I think is what your pictures show......and what a veneer merchant would understand it to be, but then its 20+ years since I bought curl veneers:001_huh:

So just out of curiosity whats it worth? I ask as I get allsorts of interesting flamed burred figured curled etc bits coming through and dont really know what they are worth or were to market them so they end up as logs!! I dont expect Im alone either!!
