Best way to get planks smooth after milling?

Depends how much you have to do, how long you want to spend doing it, arm ache, end product and budget. Besides solutions already mentioned - can buy large electric hand planers, not cheap. Makita do a 6 and 12 inch models (around £500 and £1400), mafell do a range 8,10,12 inch (several thousand quid...). These type of units are built like tanks..Picked up a second hand makita 6 inch for less that £150

HI i use a 9and a half inch grinder with a backing pad with a rough sanding disc it takes big ridges out ok and width is no problem my planer only takes 12inch width and is a bloody pain as i want wide smooth boards ,anybody in dorset run a wide planer please get in toutch cheers Mark

A router with a guide frame can be good for very large boards.

a no 7 plane and knock the corners off the iron, keep it very sharp, wax the base, and apply lots of "grunt", if your good, it'll give a finish as good as any mechanical planner

The above may sound odd but it is a VERY good way of flattening big boards. There will be plans for this on the net if you do a search.

just hire a hand held floor sander from ermin plant that will rip it down

its on a large skid frame, just had a service so all the guarding to fit. it has four feed rollers so the greenest of wood never jams. the main roller is mounted on a pivot allowing up to 20mm cut in each pass

have just googled the make Jackson Cochrane that finished in 1940 so the planer is over 84 years old
