Hi everyone,

So I'm looking to start making wooden mugs after I've finished the current silky handle orders.

My problem is what finish is safe to use.

?

Im looking to have these used as every day brew mugs so would need to be able to stand high temperatures and not poison the user!

If theres anything else I've left please let me know

Thank you

Dan

Tung oil is non toxic, in fact its just squeezed out of a nut, I have used plenty on window frames etc, cant vouch for the flavour in the tea, maybe it improves it. Do let us know!

A misconception, especially if you have a nut allergey :001_smile:

Thanks for the quick replies so far I've spoken to the shop in oxford, and the gent had never come across this before.

So I've bought the oil as posted with another tin of something else. Then its just a trail and error stage lol.

Anymore ideas please do post 👍

although poly x is a floor oil it's perfectly safe for food ware too. for tryout purposes i would turn a few hollow cylinders and finish them with, linseed, danish, tung, poly-x and that le tonkinois stuff and fill them with tea for a few hours to see what the effects are.

Yep👍 got linseed/boiled. Danish that german stuff which will be with me by tues and the second tin that I've forgotten the name of.

If not ill just change the design and use them for cold drinks

i saw some of that le tonkinois stuff being used once and it was perfectly water proof. be interested to see how it holds up to other fluids.

dont forget that cold drinks can be acidic and dissolve the finish in tho the drink

For something like a mug I don't think anything other than a pure oil would be entirely safe.

I wont bet my life on it but I think Danish oil, Finishing oil and Osmo poly X have all sort of additives to enable drying. This leaves tung and linseed oil but not certain of either's purity. I suspect both will mark with water but to maximise protection with something as small as a mug you could completely immerse it in oil for a week to maximise protection. Will take a fair old time to completely dry afterwards :001_smile:
