I made up a vice mounted on box section to drop into the dropside post holes on my truck or trailer this very afternoon.

 

Sharpening on the ground is horrible, I hate it.

 

I also made up a similar dropside hole mount for the cement mixer, to save lugging the stand about. You gotta get up on the truck to shovel the sand outta the bag anyhow! :thumbup:

I do mine in the hopper of the chipper or on the trunk of a felled tree, sharpen one side right handed and the other left handed, I've not used a vice for sharpening a chain for the best part of 20 years, I dread to think how many chains I've filed away, must be 1000's.

as long as he has the angles right I don't think it matters, I usually straddle my saw when in the wood, helps keep it steady and I don't have to carry any sort of vice, at end of day it's how we all feel comfortable, we all must be different
