Better off split after just a couple of months. I wouldn't leave it too much longer as, like others have said, it gets concrete hard. Fantastic firewood and it fetches a premium price in NZ depending on the species. Burns hot and long and I currently have it stockpiled all over the show.

We'll one of us must be right unless someone comes on and says it does't burn at all. I have always found it does't burn as good as or their dense timber never get a good flame. Saying that, it will burn but very slowly.

If it's well seasoned it burns hot and hard but lasts a fair while. We can use a good chunk to keep the fire in all night. I never turn Gum down and there's usually a fight for the stuff. Get an old Blue Gum and it'll burn like Oak, Ash etc. depending on which end go the tree.

Watch out if the grain isn't straight in the rings, then it's a pig to split (if, as they do, the branch has grown out at a queer angle and the person ringing it cuts straight rather than at 90 to the grain) and even so it's still a bar steward if left too long. Personally, I wouldn't touch it, just too much effort compared to so many others.

How's it growing, we have some that's 2 or 3 years old and it's about 10 11ft tall on the good soil

Not great, its on VERY poor soil and the frosts got it 2 years on the trot (-15 degrees). We lost a lot but are replanting some more when they come. Did you do yours through Prima?

I'll go along with whats been said ( I have burnt/split a few tons) burns well in a stove wouldnt use it on a open fire as it can crack off at times :001_smile: but unless you have got a very good splitter don't let it dry as others have said it seems to grow twisted and if you do split it it seems to "let go " with some force  I certainly would not like to tackle it with an axe

One thing I have used it for is a mate of mine does hedge laying so as an experiment I made a maul with a lump of it and I must say it is very good, he has been using it for nearly a year now and it is still in good condition and looks like it will outlast him
