What type of wood is this furniture made from?

Hi,

 

I've been given a decent wood furniture set, and I would like to repaint / re-oil the wood to give it a fresh coat and protect it etc.

 

Would anyone be able to tell me what type of wood this is? If you could also tell me what I should use to protect it, I would be grateful.

i could do with some better close up pics to make a better id

 

looking at the structure i'd say that its along the lines of keruing, lauan or balau or even dark red meranti but they can be hard to tell sometimes as the often look very much alike.

 

i'm almost certain that its a timber from the dipterocarpaceae though.

Personally I would sand it down, furniture like that is usually teak but like Steve said it's hard to tell without close up pictures.

there's no way of telling for sure as it's quite tricky to distinguish lots of those timbers apart.

 

it's either one of the balau's or dark red meranti.

I would say Meranti/Lauan.

 

Lots of the B&Q furniture is made from what looks like Lauan.

 

I am forever mending my chairs, as it is not that strong.

Not sure of species but would recommend giving it a good scrub as you seem to be doing, let it dry, sand off loose flaking bits , if it is not varnished already, then use an OIL to treat it with , teak,or danish will be fine applied with a brush, I assume it is going to be left outdoors , so this will be best repeated yearly .

As it could use re-staining...that should be ok, shouldn't it? Anyone have experience with this?
