MS261 chain break stalling engine

Good to read this; confirms that i definitely shouldn't get a Stihl 261. Just waiting for the price list for a Dolmar 5105 from TimberCutterDartmoor

It's the clutch springs, if you look one will have snapped, we had this on ours

I have 2 and they both do it, there was another thread some where about them and I think the conclusion was as above- new springs:thumbup:

But what is making the clutch spring fail prematurely . Is it the ovality in the crank I have heard about ?

I tried lots of things to remedy this stalling problem (stalling when brake applied) - including the replacement clutch springs . . . to no avail.

 

Finally sorted it, once I replaced the needle bearing.

The body of the original needle bearing was plastic, causing the clutch drum to dip slightly on one side when the brake was applied. The replacement bearing is metal = no dipping.

Just make sure the worn out plastic bearing cage hasn't worn a rebate into the crankshaft. You may find that the spur sprockets have come from the factory off centre.

We had no end of bother with our 261's . Got two Echo 620's now , a bit heavier but reliable unlike the 261's

the work one has loads of new new bearings and a new clutch drum but has worn the crank beyond use. not great for a saw thats about a year old. repair shop said it will be about 400 euro to fit a new crank!!!
