thanks for the pics mick.

 

 

 

it looks like a softwood species to me and i think it might be douglas fir. what did it smell like when you turned it?

 

 

 

It had a noticeable smell especially when I was cutting it with the saw. But I couldn't place it my nose isn't very reliable

 

For anyone else trying to work it out here's the other half of the ring
