Its a pity the government cannot make its mind up on domestic rhi. I was in a position to roll out a chp power generation scheme for woodchip a bit similar to the rent a roof scheme for solar but the latest rules on woodchip traceability has put an end to that but there may still be a loophole we can exploit for self supply. In such a scenario you may have a valuable use for your own woodchip.

HI JOHN what does it cost per ton to chip it up if i had 750/1000 ton ive seen the lorry chippers 600hp at the APF it not cheap to run that mate jon

very good question, how much do they charge?, per day, tonne, cube meter, blade damage, price any one got a price, lots of variables how hard or soft wet or dry the wood is, how easy it is to load into chipper, where the chip has go to be placed

I got a quote earlier this year for a whole tree chipper (Dutch Dragon) and they were £1800+VAT per day if it was local.

In this area he would have to chip 900 tons to cover the £2 per ton you get round here then you would have to load that onto 30 of Stobarts trucks for nothing. I know prices vary up and down the country but around here the only outlet for chip was Slough power station which stopped burning biomass and have gone onto burning rubbish waste. They no longer need to pay for chip as they can charge money for burning waste. The logistics of running the chip now to the nearest power station means there is virtually no money in it other than the transport costs, enter Stobart.

My internal costings come out at approx £10 per tonne for chipping to which I have to add the cost of the timber and transport. The power plant was originally costed to be profitable upto a maximum £80 per tonne. Obviously the price of electric has gone up quite considerably so the maximum now will be in the region of £110. I normally hire my MB Trac and Heizohack chipper out for arb work at £250 per day plus fuel however if its for dedicated biomass that rate goes upto £500 per day plus fuel as it will also include my 3 tonne excavator which I use to load the biomass into the chipper.

How many tonnes/cubic metres per day would you do with the 3 tonner standing by a woodpile chipping into trailers?

(random average of course)

thanks

Difficult to estimate really as my tonnes are seasoned so that I can achieve below 30% MC and I work to G30 spec rather than G50 both factors slow down production but as a guide approx 5 tonne per hour. If green timber and G50 spec I am sure it would be more like 7 tonne per hour certainly green is far easier on the chipper.

Its an awesome sight seeing a couple of 10 inch green Norway Spruce poles flying through, but in reality theres a lot of water to get rid of. Sorting out chips is more of an issue than I thought it would be!

Thanks for all your help
