Coat hook commision.

I don't really like turned hooks. I do like hooks cut from approriate root balls but that is hard to find.

Ok, met the lady at a market I was doing where she saw a much smaller burr oak with 3 hooks I was selling. 25mm thick 600mm long. This was advertised at £40. She wanted twice as long and " as rustic as possible" she said she didn't want to pay more than £60. I emailed her some pics of some wood she could have for that money and that bit she could have for bit more. More than 4x as much wood as the one she had seen. Anyway we settled on £80.

I was happy with that. The hooks cost me £2 each and I only paid £6 for wood at auction. So expenses around £20 with oil, sand paper etc. And 2.5 hours work ish.

The reason I asked what you thought was because I'm questioning I could make another for the same money. So what would that lump of oak cost if I were to go buy it from a shop? I have quite a few bits like this I got from auction, should I charge more, although £80 sounds a lot for a coat hook, its not any old lump of oak.

My first reaction to price was £100-£120 but don't go my pricing because as you know I am rubbish at pricing

A very early 1I made for our Hall, square pegs then turned round with a tennon Cutter and bashed into a hole a mm smaller than the tennon, it's held up to all the stuff my wife hangs on it for over 7year's now and all made out of scrappy bits in the workshop.

I've seen a few places springing up recently in empty retail units. Could it be worth getting a decent selection of your work together and trying to do something like that? Pop up shops i think they are called.

So impressed was I with the coat rack subject of this thread that I asked James to make me up one.

This is what he managed to throw together one evening.

A gorgeous piece of wood; the photos are slightly yellow as the sapwood is actually all but white. The hooks are blacksmith's. The finish is superb; smooth and with a silk sheen if you see what I mean and all edges rounded off.

The rack will probably end up adorning the wall of an apartment in a 15th century former salt mill a few miles south of Salzburg.

Couple of pics of a coat hook I was commisioned to make. Oak burr around 1150mm long and six wrought hooks. Think I undersold it though. What do you guys think its worth. Oak is 2" thick.

Very nice. What oil do you use to finish them? Multiple coats with sanding / wire wool between coats?

 

I like Gray Git's wooden peg version too. GG, is that oiled / light varnish, or just raw wood?
