Random small sawdust piles?

Another post about paint dots/stickers being used as some sort of 'marker' by unsavory characters reminded me of these...

Over the last 5 years, maybe longer, I have noticed small neat piles of what look like chainsaw shavings on the floor. Maybe a handful to each pile. I normally notice several out and about for a few weeks and then none for months. They appear everywhere from residential streets in the town centre to quiet rural roads.

Anyone else noticed this?

Or know what its about?

Marker for runner to follow, different set of dots mean different things like turn left or right, stop turn round and straight on and they shout to each other which way there going. Had this a couple of summers ago at 10 one night:thumbdown: stop a pair of runner and asked them to be quite got a load of abuse from them so next time I saw the dots set out had some fun moved and re-aranged some of them haven't seen them again.
