And by telling you they instantly put themselves in the cheapest price goes brigade, because they think if you know 10 other firms are qouting then you will be as competetive as possible. Works on some, scares others off

They think that makes you sharpen your pencil.

In truth- it probably means they only get 2 or 3 prices.

I don't ask how many other quotes but offer to negotiate should they receive a 'like for like' written quote that is lower.

I don't change the price if I'm told they have other qoutes, but not being VAT registered makes me 20% cheaper, so if I'm somewhere near the other prices that can make the difference

Just because the client is getting several quotes means nothing. I looked at a job last week where i were the 3rd or 4th and the last to quote, thinking theres no hope of getting it. Had an email this morning asking me to book it in as they liked me & felt i would do the best job. After all if you were having some work done by another trade that you didnt know any trades men would you just get one quote? Or several? & go with the one you felt happiest with?

I quoted £8k on a two week job for five men, I was told he had been quoted £4k and if I could match it I could have the job.

 

How can someone expect you to drop £4k and still look at you as a professional
