Saw Stuck in cut and carried away with falling branch

It can happen when using an outboard step cut on an overly long or heavily weighted limb. In these situations try cutting the limb smaller or use an inboard step cut, or a step cut where the top cut is made directly over the bottom one. If in doubt then remove the strop from your harness, use a bigger saw or cut smaller.

Done it twice on the same tree not long ago big ish oak to rig down and as I was doing chogs once on a bow and another while choggibg the stem just pure lazy cutting with step cuts soing big bits and doing inboard:.. Believe me I learnt thonk I bent a bar on big saw to.

 

Last week I cut a bit to happy on a big willow limb and trapped saw just I clipped it got another up and sorted.

 

Usual with experience you know when something could happen and how to prevent it... I do now

I must admit, I do find the idea of unclipping (as some people have advocated) over a grands worth of saw and watching it possibly smash to the deck a bit bewildering.

Few years back when i step cut a big lateral branch on a chestnut my 200T got trapped. Just managed to hang onto it long enough for it to come free as I didn't fancy a Stihl jigsaw puzzle. Did tear the av's to bits though.

This is what I like about the age of the forum.. I would have liked the opinion of many people so I could make my own informed dissension on the whats & why's.

 

Your saw was pulled out of your hands because of the cut you made. It was too deep..

Inboard, outboard, level...It went beyond the point of no return.

 

I have done this & been made aware of the ease of it's occurrence. Feel your wood & cuts on every cut you make & learn from it..

 

This is most imperative on bigger cuts as I'm sure we all are aware..

You need not unclip your topper saw as the clip that attaches to your strop is designed to break away at around 100kg of force. Of course a ground saw is usually attached directly to the handle. I have seen clips for sale to attach ground saw to strop.

 

As has been said, line tp and bottom cuts up exactly if you fear this happening. I think it has happened to most of us. I was using a 254 and this happend to me, ripped the saw handle from the saw!

I tend to unclip saw and tie it inboard of the cut (very important not the other way round) on bigger timber but as long as you do inboard step cut seems to be ok then

Cutting heavy long laterals can be the biggest test of a climber. Sharp saw & good cuts are the only way

You don't have to untie your saw completely. You can tie your saw onto the branch / stem that you are cutting - on the right side of the cut of course :-)
