I want one of our lads to do the trailer test so he can tow bigger trailers.

Does he need to/is it worth him doing the training first, or should I just get him a book to read up and and book the test.

Is it pretty straightforward or should we get some training first?

He drives OK and tows the little chipper.

it is a full on driving test, carried out from a HGV test center so they are pretty strict! i failed mine twice for normal driving errors, and i thought i was a good driver!

My advice would be to get some lessons to go with it

Hi Ben

its as described not very easy , in fact far from it , its as much about driving habit and road awareness than it is about positioning & reversing techniques

its well worth investing in some training before you apply for a date,

The consensus seems to be I need to send him on training.

Does he need a three day £650 course or should a couple of hours with an instructor be enough. I know it depends on his driving standard, just interested in others experience.

The "S" reversing trailer and hitching on/off I found fine its as said in posts above it's like taking your driving test again so a lesson or two just to get rid of bad habits etc and lern how they want you to do it is a good idea

I did mine without lessons and past first time, but I am pretty awesome!

I also had the advantage of having had the full LGV training a couple of years previous so all the info about the little thing examiners like was still fairly fresh.

I don't think I'd have passed straight after passing my car license.
