felling wedges

Not to divert this thread but has anyone used the "grenade" wedge where it twists as you hit it in? I think stihl make it.

I'm pretty sure the one that twists as you hit it in is still a splitting wedge. I have one (not a stihl one) and it's great for splitting logs but is too small of a surface area to use for wedging trees over IMO as it sinks into the timber rather than lifting the tree and isn't very grippy - it did it, but not very convincingly, but that was all I had in the landy at the time.

If I have one I know will need some hard driving, then it is time to bring out the Hard heads. They have a steel cap that takes a pounding.

it looks like plastic is the way to go. any difference between the different makes or are you just as well with cheap and cheerful Oregon

Can't remember who makes them but the magnesium ones for me and maul for slapping the suckers home

I always use plastic , mostly 8 or 10 inch and blooter them with a 5 lb club hammer , works for me !
