Exciting times ahead !!!

if im honest it was a mixture of both situations , Tom has a tree surgery company that deal mainly in the domestic market and i have a company that is all but solely working within the commercial side of things , we both regularly get jobs that require the removal of large volumes of timber from site and up until now we have had to pay a haulier to do this for us - the own side is that you often end up paying more to have the timber removed from site than we can make from selling it . we also felt that there is a rather large gap in the market that would allow us to purchase the kit and turn a profit . allot of what we aim to do will be considerate and constructive woodland management and the regeneration of dilapidated woodlands . Not only will the woodlands benefit from such works but the local timber market should do too. what better way to sell logs that to be able to assure customers that the timber you are burning has actually come from a woodland that has undergone such works and that the timber is from a sustainable background

Sounds like a well thought out plan, rather than a Field of Dreams "build it and they will come" Look forward to some pics of the gear in action.

Hi guys , thank you all for you kind wishes of luck , both Tom and myself are really looking forward to a positive venture that will transform the way that we work and run our own tree surgery companies. we are currently on the lookout for a 3pl winch , we were looking to get one brought down with the tractor from wilsons but time escaped us !!!

If anyone in the area can make use of this kit we will be more than happy to help with a favorable rate . but for now we will be keeping this thread updated with what we are up too with regular pictures (no big pines) before anyone comments lol .

Many many Thanks

Tom & Dave

Nicely done gents!

Are you putting together a new website or similar? Just thinking I sell a few mills and know a few tree surgeons near you but would be handy to be able to point them to a website or similar...

Good luck!

Keep it practical. You would do well to avoid BS in the seeking out, tendering and securing of contracts. The Ward Forester Scheme being plugged by DCC is an example of what not to copy, perhaps because I am a firm believer in traditional skills over pen-pushing consultancy. What is your USP? Market confidence is obviously a huge factor in determining whether you seek DP or not but if you can assure the landowner of a fair price for standing timber, given that you will handle everything from wood to product and the risk therein, you might well get ahead of day work contractors who are tempted to be unscrupulous. Nonetheless, owners are understandably nervous about their assets hence why BS free is paramount imo. Perhaps BS free is the USP!

Sorry to gatecrash the thread but I have done something similar myself. After being made redundant by my local authority employer at the end of March I decided it was time to set up my own small-scale contracting outfit, and with the help of a LEADER grant I took the plunge and purchased some extraction equipment.

I have an old 4 cylinder Valtra with forestry guarding, a Botex trailer and crane, an Igland 3 point linkage winch, and an old Ferrari 75hp alpine tractor complete with a 3.5 tonne winch for low impact skidding.

This set-up should allow me to take on small to medium scale fell and extract contracts or to bid on small standing sale parcels. Having the combination of the alpine and medium sized conventional tractor allows me to play the low-impact card without being too limited or niche.

I trade as Face North Forestry, I am based in South Oxfordshire and hope to pick up the majority of my work across Oxfordshire, Bucks, Herts, Hampshire and Northants. That said I am willing to travel and I'm currently sub-contracting for Matt Biddle of Aspect Forestry on a job up in Leicestershire, winching out willow on a very wet SSSI (that's his tractor and forwarding trailer in the background).

If anyone needs help with any forestry work or timber extraction, do get in touch.

Thanks, Nick
