Milling what looked like a really crappy ash stick, but looking at the ends the log something seemed really unusual about the ring pattern, so made the decision to quarter saw it, and so glad I did !

Unfortunately only took pictures of these 2 mirror image boards, but everything , even the scrap, came out with incredible character .

Client was over the moon, as this wasn't even the main part of the job, now he's trying to think of something really creative to do with it.

The boards in the pictures are each a full 10" wide, 20" tree diameter. From what I've understood regarding emerald borer beetles, they prefer and inhabit the cambium regions, whereas whatever caused this feature is right into the pith.

Externally just under the bark were plenty of little spikes of dormant buds, almost so many as to be burrs, would these be decay pathways into the very heart?
