I bet you're genuinely looking forward to the 'end of works' sign on that job Ian!

Come on fellas, it's in the country.

My TM would be a filthy hi-vis hanging off a Tarmac rake and maybe a filthy stolen police cone if it was school run time.

Personally I would not want lads stood between the chipper and on-coming traffic, better to have the truck facing the traffic and the lads safely behind. This is one of the advantages of the mog with front chipper, when we spent 5 weeks on the hard-shoulder M65 with no speed restriction, I was very glad of the protection.

how is it perfectly legal? its certainly not setup inline with the code of practice

You walk towards traffic so you can see things coming! I would never work behind a vehicle with on coming traffic!

But traffic will be coming from both directions on a give take priority system such as this so no matter which way you are pointing traffic will be approaching from behind at some point.

You can't see anything coming when your feeding a chipper.

 

I recall many years back, fountains had one lad killed and another very, very badly injured when they were feeding a rear chipper on a mog, on the hard-shoulder, one lad was crushed between the car and chipper, the other was thrown over the mog by the impact.

That looks like a National speed limit road, 60 mph, if it is you can't use Give and Take, can you?

And I've seen a car run into the front of a transit with the lads working at the chipper. Lucky for them nobody was chipping. Had they been I dare say the outcome wouldn't of been pretty either. I do know I would like the chance to possibly see something coming! Rather than not. :)

In your case I would certainly have something as an impact buffer. I'd probably have the Landy facing the traffic with its full ADR light system running all day. Then the workforce behind that.

 

I did have my old hilux wrote off by an old boy who pressed the wrong pedal. Country road, slowed, then floored it. Truck was facing with the traffic, he shot round us in a panic and slammed straight into the trucks passenger side and engine.

 

So if we think about it the other way round he could of a) just slammed into the front of the truck. B) hit the hopper on the chipper which probably wouldn't of stopped him and into the workforce or. C) stopped and not pressed the accelerator.
