Anyone got a picture of a 6BT in a defender? Those engines we huge the bay of my old Dodge was well occupied by one they must be crammed in on the landy, and very front heavy!

my mate had a RRC with a 6.2 GMC diesel v8 sounded like a tractor on tick over and a TVR on revs.

 

I had one with a 6.5 GMC, bit of a tight fit but sounded delightfull and ample power.

 

I have also had a Land Rover with a Perkins which had plenty of torque but not much top end.

 

For power and simplicity of conversion I would say TD5 with a power plug, mine will spin the wheels if I let it and I run 35" tyres, it will happily pull and loaded trailer.

I seem to remember working on a 6.2 gmc engine and it was a good conversion although massive was light, possibly with an alloy block but it was along time ago. I work on loads of phaser engines on a weekly basis good torque at 1500 rpm thats why they use them for generators but no top end. The TD5 engine was a good design often badly built by LR. If you get one rebuilt by someone who knows what they are doing and chipped to 200 bhp they are impresssive. Our current TD5 tows 3.5 tonnes all the time and did 80,000 miles in its first year. 9 years old now still on first engine with no major work. I would not chip a TD5 with out some major upgrades to the cooling system especially if towing. The old 300 tdis we had never made it past 80k before the head was off.

I once bought a busted RRC with a 6.2 GMC. It had a gearbox problrem, the problem was too much tourque. It had blown the overdive clean off the gearbox.

HI STEVE we used J FERNY in matlock 200hp 310lbs TQ it pull very well but look in LRO MAG IN NOV theres nene over land ones with 250hp plus and 405lbs TQ but the gear box give up :lol:jon

Extra intercooler, gas flowed the head, better exhaust, no cat, no egr. adjusted the fuel pump, boosted the turbo amongst other things. Went like the clappers for about 3 months then left bits of gearbox all over the road. jpat in bristol built me a superb gearbox with additional oil cooler that lasted a year. I think the R380 box in the Td5 stuff will struggle with 200hp.

HI STEVE our gear box was ok with 200hp but we got a new 90xs last of the td5 it lasted 6 weeks or 900 miles but the old 200hp pull very well and the UJS lasted a long time as there larger on the td5 thanks jon

If Landrover built better stronger gear box's we would have no problems to deal with.
