Where were you ?

Last nights AA conference was a fine evening of socialising, networking & being inspired by one the most remarkable tree men from around the globe.

 

Graeme McMahon of Sherbrooke Tree Services gave a very good talk & presentation of some of their most challenging rigging work in Australia.

 

Although I really enjoyed the evening & subsequent chat with the great man himself, it was painfully clear that there were not the expected number (certainly from my expectations) of climbing & grounding Arbs.

Instead, the pre event wine reception, bbq & campus bar was populated mostly by consultants & tree officers.

Great for them & us who did go, but a huge oportunity missed by everyone else.

 

 

The AA had put this evening event on with the hope of attracting those who couldn't make the day time lectures at a time which should have given people the oportunity to have come along after work.

Started at 19:15 & finished around 22:30

 

It was about £20 to attend and open to members & non members alike.

 

So my question is, why were you not there ???

If I may answer your question with another, where was the publicity?

 

The AA old school bods may have known about this but how did they go about getting the message out to the blokes with dirty hands, a posting on here would have seen a better response (unless I missed it)

I wasn't actually aware that you could go just for the talk. BBQ and rigging videos with Graeme McMahon sounded quite appealing although I don`t suppose I would have traveled that far for an evening talk. It`s a shame more people didn't go. Perhaps it's a case of the people who they were hoping to attract didn't read the literature, maybe it would be worth the AA making more of a deal on line prior to these sorts of events. (Not a criticism just a suggestion)

I love going to events like this and normally try to attend, unfortunately just not had the time this year, plus as stated, it is a bit of a way to travel for an evening especially if the full conference wasn't being attended.

 

And as dean said, us northern arb's get ignored a large proportion of the time, yes we had arbfest, but what happened to that:001_rolleyes:

 

This also highlights the north south divide issue that ALWAYS crops up, yes it is a population thing, and yes sure to history we are far more industrial up here but IMO something needs to be done to assess fair learning conditions for all.. Something I hope I can say "I helped do that up here" one day:biggrin:

Last years conference was at (I think) Warwick, and the year before that it was hosted at Manchester University.

 

Surely that's north enough ?

It is a difficult issue though in regards to attendances up here in general. It'll take time but I do believe it'll get better with more advertisement and as these differences and shows become even more of a social event.

 

I think because we are regular members on here we kind of take it for granted that other people know what's going on too, when more often than not, they don't

How about a mailing list for those who want one? Think how many people you will reach.

 

..And of course a bump would of been helpful :-)
