Mike you have a hell of a lot of experience in forestry and tree work .. That counts for a lot... And if your not experienced..... ,I have watched fully qualified guys make a mess because they have no real idea or experience in dealing with what trees , weight holding wood can or can't will do. From what I have seen ,you are top of your game... People come in with an idea and unless they can back it up should not be doing it.

Agreed, my initial post was probably quite alarmist but it still holds water, as stated above.

Insurances-public liability, employers liability, vehicle, machine, kit

taxes

wages-2 guys

vehicle purchase cost, maintenance cost, day to day running cost

chipper purchase cost, maintenance cost, consumables

cost of disposing of the waste-conifers make alot

+ saving towards a replacement vehicle/chipper/tools when the current ones die

plus the overheads of perhaps office staff, advertising, down days, breakdowns, kit thats not being used that day but still needs to be paid for-like a stumpgrinder

Job risk/ballache-if theres a greenhouse under theres a higher chance of breaking glass, not worth claiming on the insurance. if theres a 300m drag uphill throgh a dog turd ridden garden, companys might not even want the work if they have plenty

i last lived in the south of the uk, a 2 day job, 2 guys with close tip site would be between £900 and £1300 depending on company, give or take for a straight foward job

I think you left out one item from your list. A profit, after all fixed and variable cost have been calculated.

easy-lift guy

I have only been doing this job for 17 years, not a long time considering some other forum members.I have only had the misfortune of losing one workmate onsite in that time.I have seen some horrible and many small injuries.

Pretty much any manual worker would have witnessed much the same.

Holidays, cool cars , all the expensive stuff on menus, nights out, big houses, motorbikes, hot wife's that cost a lot to keep.

We are Tree Surgeons, we are the top of the tradesman, we earn more than lawyers on a bank holiday!

If you have to ask, you can't afford us.:sneaky2:

Everyone wants to be us, but they can't handle the responsibility of being awesome.

We will make a pile of trees disappear in the blink of an eye, in a very aligazam, now you see it, now you don't blink of an eye magic, some quiver with respect, others struggle with the macho fantastic ness.:001_rolleyes:

I agree with Mike...that it's not that difficult

I also agree with Swordsta... that it is quite highly skilled.

Work that one out, while I pour another Cab Sav.

I agree with Likeitorlumpit too even though I am an entrepreneur.

I even agree with Mr Blair for once, ....I think:001_smile:

I occasionally have a customer grumble that the quote is 'a little bit expensive'.

I always politely advise them that if they want they can buy £40k's worth of kit, get insured, get qualified, get experienced, get a yard sorted out then do the work themselves.
