ideal budget for a chipper

we are after a slightly bigger chipper which we can use for our increasing workload.

my dad says 5k max, but im not sure whether anything below that price tag is even worth considering. a small 24/150 TWs is about at approximately that from masons at 5300, and i reckon thats our best option.

is it worth considering any bigger chippers at a lower price?

Spend as much as you possibly can and don't buy an obscure brand.

I've just bought another chipper (from Redwood) but before I went to them I looked at a few being sold privately.

I was initially looking at the £7k region and soon discovered that at that price I would also be buying £1k of problems.

I therefore went to Redwood and spent £11500 and I've got something in superb condition and (hopefully) wont cost me anything for the next year or so.

Mine cost me £3k over 5 years ago and has needed very little work. It is the petrol 25hp Entec machine (pre timberwolf) but everything apart from the engine is the same as a TW150. I know I got a steal with mine as the bloke selling it didn't know what is was worth as he had only done 40 hours on it in 7 years, he was a landscaper that thought about doing tree work and bought it new but never bothered.

There are some cheap dogs out there but there are some gems. If I was going for a cheap machine it would be another TW150 due to their simplicity and availability of spares. There are loads of £5k machines about but think about down time (parts availability and engineer who knows the machine) if you do have a breakdown.

I've seen those greenmechs but wasn't sure how good they actually are. Need a good tidy up too by the looks of it!

They are well within the price range. Maybe the money left over could tidy them up.

What are they like to live with those old mechs?
