Maximum chipper weight?

Firm i've worked for had a bandit 90 behind a 3.5t truck, just found out it's just under 2 tonne! going off website specs, it hated it really.... didn't like setting off but once going was ok.

I've pulled 2.5 tonne with my old ldv and it was fine, pulled like a good one!

Yet to pull a big weight with the iveco yet...

You can always tell that there's a chipper behind regardless of which it is anyhow.

Yes, in that situation a larger chipper would make sense, the point I was making was that if your chip carrying capacity is low and you generally need to remove the chip, a large chipper is not really practical, IMO.

Having used a 6" chipper for years, then a 9" for further years, I have come to the conclusion I dont care about the extra weight, the extra wear and tear etc to pull the bigger chipper, this is far more inportant;

Having said that there is nothing quite like a big machine for chucking things in and walking away.:thumbup1:

This is now my ideal set up;

my thought was to have two 3.5T trucks with a 3.5T tipping trailer and one chipper. It's not the worst idea in the world.

This way you can seperate chip from log, dont have "issues" associated with 7.5 tonners, virtually no snedding time, plenty of room for crew, kit and load. This set up has capability of removing well over 4tons at a go, so suits virtually all domestic jobs we do.

Different for everyone I guess but certainly works great for us.

In answer to the OP, get the biggest chipper you can tow with your truck, its not about putting big wood through, its more about saving time and money in the long run

We tow 1928 Greenmechs with 3.5 tonne Iveco Dailys and you wouldn't know they were there. We also have a Toyota Dyna and that drags them with ease too. I think they are approx 1.3 tonne, but they will eat anything you show them! They are easier to reverse than 6'' Timberwolfs as well, because you can see them behind the chip box. If I were in the market I would also look at the new Bandit (75?) - from what I've heard/read it is a bit of a beast, though I have no personal experience of it.

if you have a 4inch chipper and chip 4inch surely if you have a 9inch chipper and chip 4inch there would be less wear and tear on the big chipper.

but a big chipper is heavier, and pulling a smaller chipper combined wieght would be more benificial as you could have more wieght on your truck and not be overall overloaded.

Oh Lordy, here we go again on that other emotional subject :laugh1:.

The van has a GVW of 3.5T regardless of the chipper weight. As long as the chipper doesn't then exceed the GTW, I'm ok.

That's my understanding anyway.
