21k a year, after tax £1400 a month which is £70 a day as a climber, don't sound much when your talking about 150 a day...and iv just gone from self employed to on the books. Self employed I was on £120 a day.

That being said, the company has just brought me 2k worth of kit, PPE, harness, ropes ect ect, iv just passed my stump grinder course (payed for) and I'm on my CS 41 (payed for) in September, followed by mewp. Start at 8 finish at 4, and 330 on a Friday, work 5 days a week and if I want to top my money up I climb at weekends for anyone one who needs me...day rate isn't everything, I like the benefits of guaranteed work and nice working hours. No late finishes for me or long drives to site. Each to there own I suppose 👍

I would watch that one if you are in employment with local authority, if you hurt yourself they are in there rights to not pay you sick pay as you were working for another company, I also think you are meant to be paying class 2 contributions as you are doing part time work. Of course you could have fallen off your bike at the weekends ...... Just a heads up :thumbup1:

I know I did it for less a long long long time ago but i cant imagine climbing for 70 a day!

madness, but we all gotta start somewhere

And that's the crux Tony. From what I've seen and heard, you are a very accomplished and productive climber.

However, I've seen climbers who have all the tickets but are worth less in the tree than on the ground.

I bet you've seen some too.

The rate varies so much. I have been in arb 2 years, on 18k. But have done lots of climbing, learnt from a very very good climber. Now pretty much the main climber where I work and get chucked up some massive stuff and get it done in a good speed. Don't know whether to ask for more of not, feel like I am been taken advantage of slightly though. Why are wages low for the work, bit de moralising sometimes, guess that's just the way it is now a days!

I pay my groundy £100 a day whether it is a full or short day, and if it is a long day i TRY to give him a bonus. I paid for his boots, lid and trousers, and his climbing tickets. He is more than worth it, if i could i would give him £120 minimum a day. Never complains, excellent onthe rigging line and can run the job on the ground flawlessly if i get subbies in. However the last guy started at £60 a day and TBH wasnt worth half of that, costing me a fortune in wasted time and broken gear. In my opinion you get what you pay for.

FWIW i sometimes climb for two other companies one of which gives me £175 a day and the other who gives me £200.......not at my request I might add. I give them my all though.

Those are the first (i think) realistic figures given in this thread Tom for what our jobs worth imo.

I couldn't imagine coming back to the uk and working for some of the wages on here

But loads will work for that so the things won't alter unfortunately.
