I really have no idea what's caused them! I've never seen offgassing from the lake at any time, and it was really very still and cold over the weekend when it froze.

I shall do some research.

Each one appears to have a hole at the center . Looks very much to me like kids or anyone really have been chucking pebbles onto the ice .  Get a couple of decent size pebbles and see if you get the same result Jonathan .

They are hundreds of metres from shore and the ice is too thin to walk. First time I've ever seen them here, or indeed anywhere!

What about crayfish or freshwater muscle ?.

Whilst they are cold blooded I guess heat is released when they breath and presume they live in a colony to keep warm like penguins?

We had far smaller, but kinda similar things on the loch before Christmas. But they ran in a sweeping line right across it. I took a picture but it’s pretty useless, never seen anything like it though. It was about 4-5” at the edges and quite walkable, probably less so in the middle.

Minus 11 this morning. Blue skies. The weather has been lovely for the last couple of weeks. We had snow 10 days ago, that's been very slowly melting each day as the temperature has been above freezing, but nights have been minus 4-7c. Clear skies throughout.

The weather is to change this week though, with significant snowfall forecast and the possibility of minus 15-20.

All the forecasts said snow to start at 17:00.

Right on cue, 17:05, starts to snow.

I am looking forward to Wednesday night's skiing on fresh powder!
