had a scare today hawthorn thorn shot into back of hand near joint through glove, and hit vien rear of hand swelled up in a matter of seconds, to a size that made me weak at the knees (very large), got to hospital and they sorted, will have a lot more respect for the hawthorn in future

Years ago I got one in a vein in my forearm, it came up like and egg, I pulled it out and the blood spurted about 1M!!!!!!!

 

But it soon stopped.

Had quite a few in knuckle joints that more or less stop me having grip for a few days.

 

Thankfully it has mainly been in my left hand.

Had one in the eye brow last winter well hedge laying had to go to ae and have it out it was sore for a fortnight hawthorn thorns seem to be the hardest to get out and all ways go septic make sure your tetanus are up to date.

I wear kevlar/stainless steel/thick leather gloves for exactly that reason.

I've had one about 1 1/2 inches in my bum-cheek, that hurt but did not bleed a lot as I am a fatty so it just pricked lard.

some nasty stories! its horrible stuff, i prefer blackthorn. i have a few extra lumps on my knuckles due to hawthorn thats gone in deep and never come out!

Dreaded Hawthawn. We did a job on DIY SOS. Sure some of you have seen the programme on TV. Not sure when it will be on. Anyway, one of our brash draggers gets a bit over aggresive when you pass him something to chip, so he yanked this long hawthawn branch off me and I felt a numbness in my right forarm. For the next 4-5 weeks it was just like a pussy swollen mess on my arm. Squeezed it everyday but nothing but puss and liquid. Then one day pulled on a pulling rope pretty hard and saw this sharp thing poking out the pussy mess on my arm. Just managed to grab the tip of it and pull it out. It was still the most pleasing thing I have ever done at work getting that bugger out. It was like the thickness of a match stick and over a cm long. 1 week later I pull the scab off and another cm long splinter comes with it out the same hole. Disgusting but very pleasurable. Still sure theres something left in there.

My father did hedge laying when he was a teenager and got some thorns in his hands. He turned 70 in September and still has a black mark under the skin in one hand from a thorn.
