Thanks for everyone's input. I am going to see if I can make something similar to the hand ratchet setup from Germany. I am usually happy supporting interesting businesses/products, despite the usual premium but I really can not see how that is justifiable.It will be getting on for £1000 by the time it is imported to the UK.

Make a steel plate adapter for the top of your bottle jack to spread the weight\force and that works just fine. Did 110 edge trees on a felling job without a problem.

Anybody made one using this principal ?

 

Its a tyre bead breaker - you turn the big nut on top and the claws move apart.

 

You wouldn't need the rim clamp , and the claws would need to be longer and wider - simple:thumbup1:

Here's some photo's of mine. A guy who does a bit of cutting for me sometimes welded a bit of chain to the plate and the handle of the jack on his - keeps it from getting lost or taken with the butt of tree when it goes over.
