Old Skool Cool, or Ultra Modern?

Looking at a lot of modern climbing techniques and equipment, I was wondering how many people use them.

I think that your work will dictate whats best e.g. lots of pruning, lots of dismantles, mostly line clearence etc.

 

I personally do mostly large dismantles, so prefer 13mm lines, hard seat harness and a blake hitch prussik.

I have used small lines, VT hitches and lightweight leg loop harnes, but find them uncomfortable for my kind of work...

I was thought old school. So I always kind of default to simple techniques because they do work. But I'm a young climber so I try to be receptive to the newer ideas...you never know they might just work well for a guy.

I hardly consider using advanced climbing hitchs and srt for getting into the tree as new school anymore.

 

SRT is hardly new! My copy of 'On Rope' was printed in 1990 and the ideas were old even then.

I think it's a shame not to at least try different methods of climbing into and within a tree, I have and only relatively recently compared to most of you, having been a bit of a luddite in the past.

 

If I had used these methods from the start of my climbing life I may not be so knackered now.

It's no big deal imo what you do, as long as the saw work is effiecient and accurate, everything else is a means to an end.

Old school or new, the bigger the Mental Toolbox the more opportunity to apply a technique for greater efficiency.

as i always try every new technique and piece of gear as it becomes available i'd say my techniques are largely old school, but my general approach is more old school

Old school, cause I'm new (if that makes sense). I want to become very comfortable with the tried and true and slowly incorporate more techniques/tricks into the bag. Also I learned to climb in the bush (logging) with spurs/flipline, no climbline so even having a extra lanyard and a climbline are like new techniques to me.
