The risk of a slip,swing or fall is a real one and should be given some real consideration.

This has been mentioned a few times now. It is a risk, but a very, very low one, probably less likely that falling down the stairs. And you don't avoid climbing the stairs while preggers, do you? (And before you point out the obvious biology issues here, it was a hypothetical question :lol:). I've never taken any sort of a swing or impact to my abdomen while climbing in college or in work. I don't think any of my female colleagues have either. Or any of my male ones, come to that.

The foetus during the first three months is tiny and is incredibly well protected by amniotic fluid, the womb wall, the pelvis, muscle and fat. The odd bump or strain caused by learning to climb in a very safe, controlled environment isn't likely to make any impact on the developing baby.

My wife continued with riding horses and all it entails during all her pregnancies ( one was twins) with no worries whatsoever.I saw her fall a few times and I have to say my heart was in my mouth.But she got back up again and continued until she thought it was best not to. Kids turned out hardy and fit as fleas.Like Tommer said above , it's been done for thousands of years.Why wrap ourselves in cotton wool?

If you feel ok in yourself about it , go for it and the best of luck.

You can climb a million trees and not slip but it only takes one slip to cause problems. You can achieve allsorts while pregnant and be very proud but if sadly if anything ever went wrong you wouldn't forgive yourself. You are already achieving/creating the most amazing thing you can ever do and be proud IMO enjoy it and you have plenty more years to practice climbing. Good luck and congratulations:)

Im looking for advice on doing my tree climbing course (no chainsaw use) while in the 1st trimester of pregnancy...any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Course providers say OK, GP seems to think OK, but also other people, friends mainly say NO! Any one else every done this?

Thanks, Melanie

Dont do it Melanie. When was the last time your GP climbed around a tree on a rope and harness, having all his insides squashed in? Cimbing up and down stairs is no comparrison. Seeing a your dead baby on a screen is horrific, no matter how tiny. You've got the rest of your life to climb trees.

Thanks so much for all the posts...lots of food for thought;

The course was already booked for October, in which case I would be too big by then and then brought forward to next month on advice by course instuctors.

My options are do the course now or wait until 6 months after the baby is (all being well) born.

I woundn't say that I am out to prove anything.....being an active person, I feel fit enough for the course but would'nt put baby at risk.....will definately chat with midwife first.

Thanks again, I'll stay posted.

Melanie

My opinion would be no way ... its all well and good saying don't wrap yourself in cotton wool, but imagine if you lost the baby or it was born with permanent damage ... would it have been worth the risk then?

Doctors and midwifes are not experts in arb so I don't see that you can rely on their verdict, how do they know what could happen :confused1:

I can appreciate that it is extremely frustrating but IMO the risk is far greater then the reward.
