I made one of these yesterday out of bone dry birch, it lit no problem but after about 8 or 9 minutes it kept going out but would re light if I blew into the slots. What am i doing wrong for it not to stay alight. I pushed the firelighter about 2" down from the top before lighting.

i did one last night for a BBQ and it took quite abit to light admitidally we took it away from a job we were at no more than 3 hours before once ours got enough air it burnt red hot all night. we used one lighter fluid to keep it going.

I had that problem before. I put it down to the 3 cuts I made in the top. 2 cuts seems to work better (for me).

 

I also think soft wood burns better. Something with a bit resin in it.
