Screw fix have an offer on a 18v hitachi combi drill and impact driver set. I got that set back in August. Money well spent imo. Done plenty with them and the batteries, albeit only 1.5ah, charge in 40 mins.

You can buy Chinese replacement batteries for the Makita LXT that work well. About £40. My 6 year old 3-speed Makita is battered like you wouldn't believe but just keeps going.

I have 4 year old Makita 18v nicad and it's still on the original batteries. They charge in 30 minutes and last long enough for anything I have to do. I've looked at replacements but keep using it and then think why bother just to keep up with the trend for li-ion or whatever is the newest tech.

We have 2 boxes of them. We have the main drill and the impact driver. Can never fault them. Brilliant pieces of kit.

I got a pair or Erbauer drills and three batteries a few years back off ebay for £40. They are NiCd batteries but the drills have been very good - they are returns from Screwfix and do the job - they are only used for DIY and the odd bit of chainsaw modification though!

The drill manufacturers are moving onto brushless motors now and using new technology to extend battery life so it might be worth waiting and the price of the present drills should come down when the new ones are being pushed more.

The best used to be Makita, Dewalt (now crap), Hitachi, Bosch Professional etc

Of those I'd go with Bosch Professional or Makita. Got Bosch Pro myself - pure quality.

Hi all what the best now out there thanks Jon

Well if you want an a solid and powerful tool you'd buy a hilti but they serious money and are more industrial than pro. I have Makita cordless tools myself and can't fault them. I have a Makita radio to. Makita 110v power tools and a hilti breaker which was owned by a diamond drilling and demolition firm for 10 years
